1945 Born, Helsinki, Finland
   
1946 Undergoes several operations for a double cleft-palate. First vision of the world from a warm water bath surrounded by beautiful nurses.
   
1951 Emigrates with family to the United States. Lives in Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York. Learns to read at age 10. Moves to Sunset Park, then Bay Ridge. Attends Fort Hamilton, High School. Weakest player on the chess team. Works at Boy Scout Camp teaching swimming, canoeing, and lifesaving.
   
1963 Enters Wagner College, Staten Island, New York as Philosophy & Religion major. Switches to English Literature in Sophomore year. Edits Wagner Literary Magazine in Junior year. Overcomes cleft-palate complex by dating one beautiful girl after another for a whole semester.
   
1965 Meets Sandra Hughes at a fraternity party at Wagner College.
   
1966 Father dies of sudden heart attack at age 56.
   
1967 Joins Sandra at Bregenz Study Program in Austria. Graduates from Wagner College with a B.A. in English Literature. Visits Finland for the first time since childhood.
   
1969 Marries Sandra Jean Hughes of Dumont, New Jersey.
   
1970 Joins E.T. Howard Advertising Agency in New York as a copywriter on Peugeot, J & B Scotch, and Minolta Cameras. Writes: "What happens inside your mind can happen inside a camera." Advertising career initially spans five years, from 1967 to 1972. Takes photo course with Ken Heyman.
   
1971 Applies to Rhode Island School of Design. Application is rejected. Enrolls for summer photography workshop at Apeiron in Millerton, New York under Diane Arbus. Workshop is cancelled, never meets Arbus. Studies with John Benson instead. Makes first self-portrait on September 2, 1971.
   
1972 Takes B & W printing courses at the New School for Social Research with George Tice; an aesthetic seeing course with Ralph Hattersley at the School of Visual Arts. Meets Ralph Gibson and A.D. Coleman. Coleman's review of "Bedrooms" at Soho Photo Gallery appears in Village Voice with first reproduced self-portrait. Skips work, walks into nearest bar and orders a double Jack Daniels in celebration.
   
1972 First solo exhibition at Soho Photo Gallery. Reapplies successfully to Rhode Island School of Design. Harry Callahan asks: "Why would you want to come here?" Replies: "To continue what I started at Apeiron." Also teaching with Callahan is Aaron Siskind. Moves to Narragansett, Rhode Island. Photographs in Pachaug, Connecticut, boyhood summer place.
   
1973 Makes second visit back to Finland with Sandra. Meets Minor White in Arlington, Massachusetts.
   
1974 During Callahan's spring sabbatical, four photographers fill his shoes: meets Ken Josephson, Lisette Model, Frederick Sommer, and Garry Winogrand. Model likes the work, Winogrand advises to pick up a paintbrush. Walker Evans also comes to lecture. Student colleagues at RISD include Starr Ockenga, Jim Stone, and Henry Horenstein. Produces "White Underpants" portfolio as M.F.A. thesis.
   
1975 Invited by Jussi Aalto to teach at the University of Industrial Arts Helsinki beginning in the fall of 1974. Stays two years. Travels extensively with Sandra through Western and Eastern Europe. Visits Soviet Union for the first time as well as Karelia and Viipuri where mother was born.
   
1976 Returns to America and advertising career in New York. Writes on Ilford and Fuji accounts.
   
1977 Joins Massachusetts Institute of Technology as Assistant Professor. Moves to Lowell Street in Andover, Massachusetts.
   
1978 "Frostbite", first monograph is published by Morgan & Morgan. First American publication in Popular Photography Annual and Camera 35.
   
1979 Daniel Hughes Minkkinen is born February 15. Begins series of self-portraits with son. Meets Duane Michals, Arthur Tress, and Peter Hujar.
   
1980 Curates and edits, "New American Nudes: Recent Trends and Attitudes" for the Creative Photography Gallery. Writes for Views: a Journal of Photography in New England. With Starr Ockenga, helps initiate graduate program at MIT. Meets Robert Frank and Lee Friedlander. Appointed Editor of Views, following founding editor, A.D. Coleman.
   
1981 Joins faculty at Philadelphia College of Art as visiting artist. Continues writing essays on photographers such as Robert Frank and Harry Callahan for photographic encyclopedia.
   
1982 Returns to advertising copywriting in Boston at Quinn & Johnson/BBDO.
   
1983 Invited by Lucien Clergue to present work in "Fantastic Photography in Europe" at the Rencontres d'Arles. Conducts first workshop in Arles. Meets Nathalie Emprin, translator and assistant. Also philosophy professor Robert Pujade. Begins work with Polaroid 20 x 24 camera at Museum of Fine Arts Boston. "Father & Son", first showing of self-portraits with Daniel at the Robert Klein Gallery in Boston.
   
1984 Invited back to teach in Finland at the Lahti Institute of Design and University of Art and Design Helsinki. Meets Viviane Esders who presents exhibitions in Paris and other French venues. Stays two years in Finland with Sandra and Daniel in Lahti, Finland.
   
1985 Lectures and teaches broadly in Finland. Meets Marketta Seppälä of the Pori Art Museum. Hosts Harry and Eleanor Callahan visit. Extensive family travels in Western Europe; also visit to Greece.
   
1986 Presents an evening projection of Finnish Photography at the Rencontres d'Arles. Pori/Paris poster wins Lion d'or prize. Meets Michel Tournier.
   
1986 Gives up bid to become Professor of Photography in Finland. Returns to America and resumes advertising career as Creative Director at Crosson, Wolf & Partners in Boston. Kimmo Koskela, a former Finnish student, begins filming biographical material on life and work.
   
1988 Joins the University of Lowell as Associate Professor of Art. Moves to Fosters Pond. Conducts workshop in Finland and Leningrad for Finnish and American students.
   
1989 Nathalie Emprin becomes curator at Galerie Suzel Berna in Antibes, France. Joins Ralph Gibson and Eikoh Hosoe at "Three Masters of the Surreal" vernissage. Conducts workshop for American and Finnish students in Finland and Prague, Czechoslovkia just before Velvet Revolution.
   
1990 Conducts workshop in northern Lapland and Vardø, Norway where Kimmo Koskela continues filming work in progress. Galerie Nathalie C. Emprin opens in Paris. Sandra Minkkinen joins MIT Press as senior production editor.
   
1991 Curates "Finnice", an extensive survey of Finnish Photography (with Nathalie Emprin) for City of Nice and surrounding towns on French Riviera. Camera International devotes entire issue to the show. Meets Joan Fontcuberta in Barcelona.
   
1992 Joins the University of Art and Design Helsinki as Docent in the Photography Department. Finnish government confers knighthood with the First Class Order of the Lion Medal. Begins self-portraits with women in Asikkala, Finland.
   
1993 Curates "Elegant Intimacy", an exhibition and book on the works of J. H. Lartigue, Sally Mann, and others for the Retretti Art Center in Punkaharju, Finland. Meets Sally Mann. Both families travel to St. Petersburg. Promoted to full professor at the University of Lowell.
   
1994 "Waterline", published in France (Marval), America (Aperture) and Finland (Otava) with an essay by Michel Tournier, is voted Book of the Year at the 25th Rencontres d'Arles. "Waterline" retrospective begins museum tour in Europe. Celebrates 25th wedding anniversary with Sandra on Nantucket Island.
   
1995 First solo exhibition in New York (since 1972) at Houk Friedman Gallery. Begins working in the American southwest. "Still Not There", an hour long documentary by Kimmo Koskela on the life and photographic/video work produced for Finnish television. Meets Radu Stern, director adjoint, École d'arts appliqués, Vevey, Switzerland. Begins teaching first year students in the photography program there. The University of Lowell becomes the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
   
1996 "Still Not There" is screened at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Begins summer teaching at the Maine Photographic Workshops and the Toscana Photographic Workshops. Conducts "Spirit Level", a three week workshop with Timo Laaksonen for ten American, ten Finnish, and ten Swiss students through Finland, Eastern Europe and Switzerland.
   
1997 "Body Land" is published by Federico Motta Editore in Milan. "Still Not There" is screened at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. Drives cross country to continue work in the American southwest.
   
1998 Appointed President of the Jury at Images '98 in Vevey, Switzerland. Musta Taide in Helsinki publishes "ten minutes past midnight", a major exhibition at Gallen Kallela Museum, studio home of the Finnish painter. Show travels to the Mois de la Photo in Paris. "Body Land" is published by Editions Nathan in Paris. "Still Not There" receives silver key at Trebianka Solvice Film Festival; Geraldine Chaplin is the juror. Meets Valerio Tazzetti at Photo & Co. in Torino.
   
1999 Begins "Frequent Flyer", a series of linked images spanning continents. Former student Timo Laaksonen joins second excursion to the American southwest. Meets Selva Barni. Continues self-portraits with women in Italy and France.
   
2000 Attends opening in Japan of "The Body as an Expression of the Subconscious" at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Visits Kiso-Fukushima where father was born. Writes essay on Polaroid Photography for "Boston Photographers: 1955-1985" at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. Curates, with Timo Laaksonen, "In the Spirit of the Masters", for the Kerava Art Museum in Finland. Participates in "EGG: The Art Show" from PBS/WNET New York in the segment, "Who Am I" with Cindy Sherman, Bruce Gilden, and Ernst Withers. Also featured on WGBH-TV Boston in "Arts Close Up". Conducts first workshop in Santa Fe. Continues teaching in Maine and Tuscany. Begins working with pinhole cameras.
   
2001 Conducts workshops in Vevey, Oregon, Santa Fe, Tuscany, and Maine. Photographs along the Columbia River Gorge in search of Carelton Watkins' "best possible views". Obtains sabbatical for the fall semester. Begins working on a new book devoted to the work made out west and the self-portraits made with women.
